Somebody just commented on this picture over on cosplay.com and it reminded me that I hadn’t shared it with you fine tumblrfolks yet.
So here you are, a picture of my steampunk costume from 2009.

Cosplay of the Day: Sexy R2 ballerina
Made and worn by redditor leeloo010101010:
The hat is styrofoam covered with felt then decorated with cut out vinyl details, vinyl ruffle, and rhinestones then attached to a headband. The corset is made from white vinyl with steel boning and cotton lining, and the details are cut out vinyl pieces attached with iron-activated adhesive. The tutu is about 25 yards of tulle pleated into layers of different lengths, hand tacked together and decorated with rhinestones. It took me about a month total to make all three pieces.
This is my problem with Cosplay in general at the moment. Why couldn’t she just be an R2 Ballerina? Why did she have to be a sexy R2 ballerina? What about this outfit makes it sexy? Is it because she’s a geek chic, a nerdy girl, one of us - and not an unattractive one? She’s clearly worked very hard on this costume, and I have far more respect for cosplayers that make their outfits instead of just buying them - so why demean all her hard work by making it “sexy”?
